A little secret about the industry - Microcurrent has always been the secret of your skin care specialists creative genius.

About Microcurrent

Microcurrent therapy is supported by more than 35 years of research. Microcurrent was first used in the medical and physiotherapy fields to activate the skin’s natural chemicals responsible for health and vitality. Injury to the body disrupts normal electrical activity. Microcurrent produces electrical signals, like those naturally occurring when the body is repairing damaged tissues. By applying similar electrical currents, the healing process is enhanced.

Cellular Benefits or Pros of Microcurrent

Microcurrent is a gentle, subsensory electrical stimulation which triggers the body’s natural skin enhancement chemicals at a cellular level. The cells of the body are recharged and ATP increases by nearly 500%.

Accelerated Cellular Repair

Microcurrent increases ATP levels, increases free amino acids in injured cells and promotes ion transfer through cell membranes. These factors contribute to accelerated cellular repair and age prevention.

Cumulative ATP Results

With each Microcurrent application ATP levels are stockpiled or stored. After a series of Microcurrent sessions, the increased levels of ATP allow muscles to stay in the re-educated positions for longer periods of time. The increased blood circulation improves the overall health of the skin, underlying tissues, and muscles.

Collagen Building

Cells, fascia and collagen in the human body tend to hold a “memory.” Injury, trauma, environmental factors and poor nutrition contribute to a paralyzation of cell membrane channels where nutrition cannot enter the cell and toxic waste builds up because it cannot be excreted. Microcurrent is believed to erase past memory of injury or trauma by opening the cell membranes and allowing waste products to be excreted and new nutrition to be accepted.

Cons or Disadvantages of Microcurrent

  • You’ll Need Instruction to Use Effectively
  • In the beginning, you’ll need to use Microcurrent frequently (3-7x weekly) until your facial muscles, connective tissue and facial skin have developed a firmer average tone for your brain to acknowledge and maintain this
  • Quality and effectiveness of home Microcurrent toning devices vary widely - You'll need to the right tool for the right tool
  • Some home Microcurrent facial machines give immediate but unsustainable, limited results

Microcurrent in Esthetics

During a typical Microcurrent procedure, a skin care professional will apply conductive gel and water based serums, based on the client’s skin health goals. Low-level current, mimicking the body’s natural frequencies, will be painlessly applied with gloves or wands. As the muscles are sculpted into lifted positions, the increased ATP, collagen, and elastin enables the skin to hold the position for a longer period of time. Effects with Microcurrent are cumulative. Although results are commonly seen after one session, a series of Microcurrent sessions are advised to obtain desired and sustained results.

Esthetic Benefits of Microcurrent

  • Helps delay premature aging
  • Hydrates and revitalizes skin
  • Restores a healthy, youthful glow
  • Minimizes large pores and aids in acne treatments
  • Reduces symptoms of Sinusitis, Rhinitis, and Rosacea
  • Tightens sagging jowls, double chins, and fatty cheeks
  • Diminishes or eliminates fine lines, creases and wrinkles
  • Reduces dark circles or puffiness around the eyes and sagging at the neck

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Microcurrent Facial Feel Like on the Skin?

Microcurrent doesn't feel like anything in particular and this is how it should feel.

Microcurrent is subsensory...it’s below your ability to feel it.

This seems counter-intuitive, but True Microcurrent should have no feeling at all...except maybe on the forehead where there isn’t much padding.

Why?

The tiny amperage of microcurrent, 1/1,000,000 amps which is below 500 microamperes, is so low it’s literally below your ability to feel it. This is called subsensory. Some very sensitive people say they feel a very slight ‘humming’ sensation particularly on the forehead, and even these people report it is ‘barely there.’

This very low current mimics your body’s own electrical current, so it’s sneaking in there and boosting cellular turnover, increasing protein formation, ramping up cellular functioning while promoting cellular regeneration and healing.

And because it’s an enhanced version of your body's own regenerative current, it imparts a soothing, healing and relaxing response in your body while you’re using it. Pretty good, right?

A microcurrent facial feels:

  • Relaxing
  • Soothing
  • Like nothing at all (Subsensory)

I’ve even had my studio clients fall asleep during professional microcurrent treatments only to wake up at the end feeling refreshed. Many of my clients have told me they always look forward to these treatments at the end of their work day because they knew they’d be getting a healing nap.

FYI: If your microcurrent device shocks you or you feel an electrical current, you are not using microcurrent and may actually be causing harm to your skin. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is the energy of life, growth, repair, lifting and brilliant, beautiful skin. ATP production is enhanced by low microcurrent frequencies and ATP production is actually STOPPED from being produced at electrical frequencies above 500 microamperes.

Simply put, if you can feel the electrical current, it’s not microcurrent and you’re not getting the benefit.

Would I Have to Use Gels with the Device?

Yes, almost every personal home microcurrent device needs a conductive gel or some sort of medium, to direct the electrical current into your skin. (Neurotris’ Pico Toner is the only exception.)

You can use conductive gels, bio-cellulose masks, seaweed gel masks, hydrating gel masks, serums, even Smart water, as effective options for conducting microcurrent energy into your skin.

My favorites are microcurrent used over bio-cellulose masks or nutrient-rich gel masks. The final result is amazing!

PRO TIP: Using your microcurrent device for just a few minutes over your most effective water-based serum, especially right before bed, will give your skin an even better response to your product. Only three-minutes is all it takes for you will see even better results from your favorite serums.

And you can do this nightly...even if you’re already using microcurrent for lifting several times a week.

What are the Side Effects of Microcurrent?

The side effects of using microcurrent are looking younger, having glowing skin and feeling fantastic!

Are there undesirable side effects? No, there are no undesirable side effects of using Microcurrent.

That said, there are people who SHOULD NOT use microcurrent.

If you suffer from any of the following health issues, DO NOT use microcurrent, or any other electrical device, on your skin except under the supervision and advice of your MD.

  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Epilepsy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Pacemaker
  • Metal Implants or pins in the application area
  • Thrombosis
  • Phlebitis
  • Under a physician’s care for a disorder, illness, disease, or injury
  • Open Sores
  • In the first 10 days after engaging in any invasive skin procedures
  • Areas where you’ve had facial fillers

Do You Have Facial Fillers? If you’ve had certain face fillers, you also aren’t a good candidate. Patients who’ve had a lot of fillers don't get much benefit from the upper face receiving microcurrent since their muscles are frozen.

What is a Microcurrent Facial?

Microcurrent facials are having a renaissance because consumers are realizing the profound and amazing results microcurrent facial results they deliver.

A Microcurrent facial is a specialized electrical skin care treatment, or facial, which uses a microcurrent device to boost the firmness, health, vitality and higher muscle tone of your face, neck or other body parts.

Microcurrent facials are often referred to as Non-Surgical Facelifts because of the profound and significant results skills facialists can get for their clients. It literally looks so good it’s as if you’d had a facelift...but without the surgery.

Of course, there are limits to what microcurrent can do. It can’t get rid of excessively loose skin but it can improve the tone, resilience, and firmness of your skin, connective tissue and muscle under your skin, vastly improving your overall appearance.

You can get a microcurrent facial from your esthetician or purchase a well-engineered microcurrent home device and give yourself microcurrent facials. Your home care aids and supports the powerful, deeper work your esthetician does in the studio.

Microcurrent uses 1/1,000,000 of an amp (1 microampere) which matches the same current, or waveform, as your body uses to carry out cellular life, tissue repair and maintain muscle tone.

Typically microcurrent facials are done in your eshtetican’s skin studio or in a MedSpa by licensed estheticians who have been highly trained in the use of microcurrent to lift, firm, tighten and improve the contours of your face, neck and other body parts. One or two electrical probes are used, usually over a gel mask or serum, to conduct this bidirectional current into your skin, connective tissue and muscle.

Microcurrent facials have many benefits:

  • Diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improving muscle tone in face, neck or body
  • Improving circulation
  • Clearing up or reducing acne
  • Lifting of jowls and eyebrows
  • Addressing Sun Damage
  • Skin Pigmentation improvement
  • Product Penetration when used over serms or water-based actives
  • Stimulating Fibroblast production
  • Smoother, firmer skin
  • Increasing Hydration and revitalizing your skin
  • Improving your skin’s elasticity
  • Increasing natural collagen production
  • Increasing natural elastin production
  • Increasing natural ATP production by 500%
  • Increasing energy for your skin to use
  • Getting that bouncy, juicy and hydrated feeling

This is what microcurrent facials are.  Good stuff, right?

Have you ever performed microcurrent facial to yourself?

Oh yes, I’ve worked on my own face using Microcurrent for over 30 years and it is the most powerful tool in my tool box. Microcurrent is so versatile, with such profound results, it’s my go to and it goes on vacations with me.

I’ve used microcurrent to lift, tone and refine my face and neck. I love it over a nutritive gel mask or a good serum.  I routinely use microcurrent as maintenance 3x weekly for continuing improvements to my facial contour and shape.

I’ve used both the handheld devices and the pro devices which have dual probes.
In a pinch, I’ll use the simple microcurrent devices, fub I will always favor the well-engineered, bi-direction, alternative microcurrent which actually builds up and retrains the muscles of my face and neck so my brain is constantly getting a higher sample of what is the average firmness of my facial muscles. The higher the average firmness the less work I have to do over time.

Is Microcurrent Facial Better than Facial Fillers?

Is microcurrent better than facial fillers? Well, it depends.

When skillfully performed, and done regularly in close succession to each other, microcurrent treatments can effectively retrain your facial muscles, while releasing the overlying fascia that constricts your skin into creases and wrinkles, smoothing out your facial appearance therefore reducing, or even eliminating, the need for you to get facial fillers.

However, in order to get this high level of results, you will have to religiously get microcurrent treatments in a series, especially pro-level quality, or develop great skill with a well-engineered personal microcurrent device, using it often.

To get the results that can rival facial fillers, plan on getting microcurrent facials, or using your well-engineered home device 3x weekly for 60 days. And plan on investing time to learn how to use your home device with higher skill.

Depending upon the depth of the creases and lines, you may be able to get very similar results with the disciplined and regular use of microcurrent and therefore avoiding without the use of facial filler injections.

Consider, that many professional estheticians have no problem combining these two modalities.

As long as you’re a good candidate for safe use of both of these modalities, facial fillers and microcurrent, why not reap the compounded benefits of their combined use.

Are Microcurrent Facials Safe?

Yes!

Microcurrent facials are exceedingly safe, non-invasive, anti-aging facial treatments that result in your skin being firmer, more contoured and deeply hydrated. Microcurrent facials can be enjoyed as one-time facials or, for more profound improvements, in an uninterrupted series for comprehensive results. In fact, microcurrent is safe to use on all skin-types. It’s a universally significant boost to your anti-aging strategy.

Even people with Rosacea are in need of a "healing" facial. This makes Microcurrent Treatments a no-brainer! Microcurrent delivers its low level current into the skin, increasing your skin’s ATP production, promoting healing and renewal of the skin cells. Conduction of this deeply gentle current into your skin, through a calming gel-based mask, is a fantastic Pro-Tip!

However, some people should avoid it.

Who should avoid Microcurrent? People who have pacemakers, metal implants, have cancer or who have open sores, such as severe acne or unknown lesions, should avoid the microcurrent facial.

And if you’re pregnant or nursing, best to avoid microcurrent and all electrical personal devices unless your medical doctors OK’s it first.

If you have cancer…  whether you're being treated for cancer or not....if you have it, this is big contraindication (a big no-no) that makes you NOT a candidate for the use of microcurrent at any level. There is a very good reason for this.

The reason you shouldn’t use microcurrent when you have cancer is that microcurrent is effective at causing your lymphatic system to move lymph fluid around your, as part of your immune system, moving this lymph fluid from lymph node to lymph node.

NOTE: Lymph fluid is that clear liquid that seeps out of a popped pimple or healing wound.  This is part of your immune system.

So, if you have cancer, and a cancer cell happens to be cast off from it’s main location and get swept up in your lymph system...these cancer cells can accidentally be spread to other parts of your body, make their way into other lymph nodes, inadvertently spreading the cancer.

In the absence of cancer, pregnancy, nursing mothers, open lesions or pacemakers, microcurrent facials are one of the most universally significant skin care treatments you can receive.
